Eurasian pygmy shrew

Sorex minutus (Linnaeus, 1766)

Small shrew, with a general coloration that is brown on the dorsal area and greyish on the ventral area. It feeds mainly on terrestrial invertebrates. It is evenly distributed throughout the north of the peninsula, making penetrations in more southern sectors of the mountains of the centre of the peninsula. Generalist species with Middle European environmental requirements, which frequents all types of environments (forest and open) as long as it has sufficient plant cover at low altitudes and a certain degree of humidity. The reproductive period extends between spring and summer. Very rare species, it does not exceed 1% of the catches of the SEMICE project. Uncertain population trend (+8,6% rate of change in the period 2008-2022).
