Characteristics
Family: Soricidae
Spanish: Musgaño europeo
French:
English: Miller's water shrew
Morphologically, it is almost identical to the Iberian water shrew (Neomys anomalus). It can be differentiated from the Eurasian water shrew (Neomys fodiens), with which it cohabits in the Catalan Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees, due to the stiff hairs that appear only in part of the tail and hind feet, but the distinction is not always obvious. In the Iberian Peninsula, it is only found in the eastern half of the Pyrenees and in the east of Catalonia, mainly in streams, but also in stagnant water. In the rest of Europe, it is irregularly distributed in the south, center and east, and also reaches south-west Asia. Like other water shrews, it has a black back and a white belly, and feeds mainly on terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates. The separation of the species from the Iberian water shrew was possible thanks to different genetic studies. Species of exceptional appearance within the SEMICE project, because its aquatic behavior and low population density make it difficult to capture.
