Water shrew

Neomys fodiens (Pennant 1771)

Large, semi-aquatic shrew that has certain morphological adaptations to swimming. It has a very contrasting coloration, with a very dark, almost black back, and a whitish or silver-grey belly. Opportunistic predator that feeds mainly on terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates. It has some European environmental requirements, generally linked to aquatic environments with permanent, clean and oxygenated waters. It is distributed throughout the large mountain ranges of the north of the peninsula and low-lying areas with an Atlantic climate. Day and night activity with various phases throughout the day. Very rare species, it does not exceed 1% of the catches of the SEMICE project.
