Characteristics
Family: Soricidae
Spanish: Musgaño de Cabrera
French: Iberian water shrew
English: Iberian water shrew
Morphologically it is almost identical to the Miller's water shrew (Neomys milleri), and they cannot be reliably distinguished. Like other water shrews, it has a black back and white belly, and feeds mainly on terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates found in small watercourses. The separation of the species from the Miller's water shrew could be carried out thanks to different genetic studies. It is endemic to the Iberian Peninsula, where it is mainly concentrated in the northern western half, while the rest of its distribution area is quite fragmented. Currently, in Catalonia its presence is only known in some local patches in the southern half of the territory. Species of exceptional appearance within the SEMICE project, since its aquatic behavior and low population density difficult its capture.
