Small rodent, with a rounded snout and short ears, and a tail that does not exceed the length of the body. It has light brown dorsal coloration and light ventral coloration (similar to the field mouse). Their diet is vegetarian, and is supplemented with small invertebrates. It is a thermophilic species with Mediterranean requirements that is distributed throughout the peninsular territory with the exception of the northernmost and highest areas. It is a species associated with open spaces covered by abundant herbaceous and shrubby vegetation (grasslands, crops, scrub), very scarce in forest environments. The reproductive cycle is seasonal, presenting the maximum peaks in spring and autumn and decreasing in summer and winter. Frequent species, it represents 10% of the catches of the SEMICE project. Population trend moderate decrease (–3.5% rate of change in the period 2008-2022).

El gráfico indica cómo ha ido cambiando la abundancia de las poblaciones de la especie a tres niveles geográficos distintos (de más a menos extenso): general (Cataluña y Andorra), región mediterránea (cordilleras Litoral y Prelitoral, y otras sierras más meridionales), y región alpina y subalpina (Pirineo y Prepirineo). Cada punto representa una campaña de seguimiento, teniendo en cuenta que se hacen dos campañas anualmente: primavera y otoño.
