House mouse

Mus musculus (Linnaeus 1758)

Small rodent, slightly larger than the Algerian mouse, from which it differs by having larger ears and a longer tail in relation to the body. There are two main colours, one rather dark (greyish) that generally corresponds to commensal populations (that live in humanized environments), and a light brown that is more typical of feral populations. Its diet is granivorous, and is supplemented with small invertebrates. It is a cosmopolitan species and is distributed throughout the planet, with the exception of the Antarctic continent. The house mouse has a preference for inhabiting highly humanized environments, such as all kinds of buildings and their surroundings (rainfed and irrigated crops). The reproductive cycle is seasonal, presenting the maximum peaks in spring and autumn and decreasing in summer and winter. Very rare species, it does not exceed 1% of the catches of the SEMICE project.
