Mediterranean Field vole

Microtus lavernedii (Crespon, 1844)

Recent taxonomic changes indicate that Iberian individuals would correspond to a different lineage than continental Europe (Microtus agrestis). Small vole with reddish-brown dorsal coloration (with golden tones) and grayish ventral. The fur completely covers the ears, and has a very short tail. It has a specialized diet based on shoots, leaves and stems of herbaceous plants, although it can also eat small invertebrates. It presents twilight and nocturnal activity. It presents Central European environmental requirements, and frequents the cold and humid environments of medium and high mountain, although it can make significant penetrations in low areas of Mediterranean influence. Microtus agrestis prefers open environments covered with abundant herbaceous vegetation and subjected to low grazing pressure. In low and temperate areas reproduction can occur throughout the year, but in high and cold areas the reproductive period is restricted to the favorable season. Very rare species, it does not exceed 1% of the catches of the SEMICE project.
