Microtus arvalis (Pallas 1778)

Small vole with brown dorsal coloration and the belly is grayish with yellowish tones. The head is large, the neck short and the ears relatively protruding. It is a burrowing and underground life species. Mainly nocturnal, although they can present diurnal phases. It is a strict herbivore and feeds mainly on the stems of meadow grasses. In the Iberian Peninsula we find two subspecies of exclusive distribution, one occupies the northern and central half of the Peninsula, and the other is found only in the Pyrenees. The Pyrenean population has low density, but in the center of the peninsula it can experience regular population outbreaks that are cyclical. It breeds between winter and autumn. Very rare species, it does not exceed 1% of the catches of the SEMICE project.
