Water vole

Arvicola sapidus (Miller, 1908)

It is a rodent of the family of arvicolids of medium size and with adaptations to semi-aquatic life. Their fur is dense, short, and brown, and partially covers the ears. The belly is ash color with yellowish tones. It has a very specialized diet in stems and leaves of herbaceous plants from the edge of rivers. It is an animal linked to river courses and water bodies covered with herbaceous vegetation and with edges suitable for being excavated where it builds burrows. It is widely distributed throughout the peninsular territory. The reproductive period in Iberian populations seems to be quite long, even reaching the whole year. Very rare species, it does not exceed 1% of the catches of the SEMICE project. Threatened species (category VU).
